Saratoga community briefs for the week of July 26
Local teens named BofA leaders
Two Saratoga teens are among five high school students from Silicon Valley selected as Student Leaders by Bank of America. Saratoga High School senior George Bian and Lynbrook High School senior Neil Warke earned paid summer internship at local nonprofits through the BofA program, designed to help young people gain work experience, broaden their perspective on how nonprofits serve community needs, and advance their civic engagement.
Bian and Warke worked at West Valley Community Services and LifeMoves this summer, along with Student Leaders from San Jose, Los Altos and Mountain View.
“Every summer, we look forward to working alongside the Student Leaders as they explore our nonprofit organization and discover more about their capabilities in the workplace,” said Bruce Ives, CEO of LifeMoves, a nonprofit dedicated to ending the cycle of homelessness in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Kicking cancer
The American Cancer Society will host an Aug. 8 kickoff event for its 12th annual walk to raise money for breast cancer research.
The kickoff will highlight how individuals, businesses and organizations can support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Silicon Valley and will feature inspirational stories from breast cancer survivors. Guests will also enjoy a presentation by a breast cancer researcher and get details about the upcoming community walk, set for Oct. 26.
Last year, 14,000 walkers in Silicon Valley helped to raise more than $768,000.
The kickoff celebration is set for 6:30 p.m. at the Corinthian Grand Ballroom, 196 N. Third St. in San Jose. Registration is required to http://bit.ly/SVKickoffRSVP2019, or email SiliconValleyCAStrides@cancer.org.
