Hot round at sheriff’s training site sparks fire near East Bay jail
A small wildfire burned 10 acres Friday in Clayton, authorities said.
CLAYTON — A stray bullet at a sheriff’s training site near Clayton sparked a small wildfire near Mount Diablo State Park on Friday, authorities said.
Fire crews responded just after 4 p.m. to reports of a fire near 12000 Marsh Creek Road, on the hillside of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office training site, said East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jake Gonzalez.
The fire was initially reported at 2 to 3 acres in size, he said.
Fire crews were able to contain the blaze at 10 acres.
Assistant Chief Chris Bachman said a hot round near the shooting range ignited the fire. The nearby Marsh Creek Detention Facility, one of three main jails in the county, was not damaged. No injuries were reported, he said.
