Outside Lands: Drag queen Alyssa Edwards slams spicy margaritas with chef Melissa King

Early in the evening on Friday, “Top Chef” finalist and Whole Foods ambassador Melissa King got cozy with drag queen and TV personality Justine Dwayne Lee Johnson — aka Alyssa Edwards — on the Outside Lands GastroMagic stage.

Inspired by a nifty tongue pop thingie Edwards is known for doing, the San Francisco chef made a series of dishes to the hoots and hollers of the crowd. Edwards sampled all the goods dressed to the nines in a sequined sea foam-green mini dress and pink fingernails that went on for miles.

They started with a Spicy Margarita, made with tequila, orange liqueur and mango rimmed with Pop Rocks. After taking a sip out of a jumbo glass, Edwards exclaimed: “Not a double, that’s a triple! That’s delicious. Oh girl, I’m gonna be serving that at parties.”

King then moved on to Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken, a dish often found at the prepared foods station at Whole Foods. She made it using diced chicken, five-spice powder, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, salt, baking soda, sweet potato flour, sugar and egg whites.

King asked: “Are you ready to dredge?” To which Edwards answered, “What that mean? I’m from the south but I don’t know how to make fried chicken. I make one stop in the south and it’s called KFC.”

Edwards was so taken with the food, she agreed to perform a Southern two-step dance with 10 random backup dancers from the audience. The impromptu dancers, Edwards and King, who was gifted a matching sequined seafoam green jacket, danced to Shania Twain’s “I Feel Like a Woman” in what can only be described as one of the most feel-good moments on Friday at Outside Lands.
