Running back tandems at Valley Christian and Wilcox pave the way for victories in league openers.
It’s Week 6 of the Bay’s high school football season and more of the area’s top teams are getting into higher-leverage conference games.

The Wilcox offensive line
The Chargers piled up 407 rushing yards in a 26-15 victory at Palo Alto, with running backs Paul M. Rosa and Isaiah Flores trading hand-offs for most of the night. Rosa, after a two-game absence due to injury, finished with 163 yards on 30 carries and scored a TD, while Flores had 27 carries for 177 yards and also found the end zone.
Chase Laubach, Valley Christian
Ran for 118 yards in 12 carries, including a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, as Valley Christian defeated St. Francis 28-7 to open West Catholic Athletic League play.
Isaiah McElvane, Valley Christian
His 37-yard touchdown run four plays into the third quarter broke a 7-7 tie and later in the period he made an interception in the corner of the end zone after St. Francis moved inside the Valley 20. “Two of the biggest plays of the game,” Valley coach Mike Machado said. McElvane finished with 106 yards in 19 carries.

Shamar Garrett, De La Salle
Passed for one TD (on a 64-yard halfback option), ran for another (to give DLS a lead it never relinquished) and returned a punt 46 yards to set up another TD.
Teddy Buchanan, St. Ignatius
One of the rare two-way players as a quarterback, Buchanan recorded a couple of tackles for loss on defense, but left his imprint in the 74th annual Bruce-Mahoney rivalry game on offense. The senior tossed a pair of TDs and ran for another during a 28-14 triumph over Sacred Heart Cathedral at Kezar Stadium.
Ryan O’Neil, Campolindo
The 6-foot, 200-pound senior ran for three touchdowns — 7, 67 and 9 yards — in a convincing 34-14 win over Rancho Cotate. He needed only 10 carries to compile 117 rushing yards.
