American Fire in Napa County rapidly burns over 500 acres
AMERICAN CANYON — Fire crews are at the scene of a fast-growing vegetation fire east of the city and just west of Interstate 80 that has burned more than 500 acres, authorities said Sunday.
Weather conditions had led officials to issue a red-flag warning through Sunday evening, citing forecasts of low humidity and gusty winds.
Around 1:15 p.m., California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection resources responded to the reports of the fire off the 2500 block of Canyon Road north of American Canyon Road, in hilly terrain about three miles east of the city and half a mile from I-80.
By 4:25 p.m., American Canyon police tweeted that the fire was listed at about 30 to 40 acres, but light flashy fuels, as well as warm temperatures and off-shore winds helped it spread to about 150 acres by 5 p.m.
At that point, CalFire staff issued a qualified evacuation alert for residents of the Newell Drive area, about two miles west of the fire, and began calling for additional resources to respond to the area.
In addition, the Napa County sheriff’s office called for advisory evacuations around 5:15 p.m. along Sagebush Lane north of Donaldson Way, Sorrento Lane, Farentino Place and Selvino Court.
Tweets by a reporter with KGO-TV, this organization’s media partner, quoted a fire chief for the American Fire Protection District saying the fire was more than 200 acres, but nearing containment.
Shortly after 7 p.m., CalFire said the fire was at 500 acres with at least 30 percent containment. That was increased to 526 acres by 8:10 p.m.
By 9 p.m., all evacuation orders and warnings and related road closures had been lifted, according to a CalFire tweet.
There were no immediate reports of a cause or injuries.
