Washington radio broadcasters rain on 49ers Slip ‘N Slide victory celebration
By now you have likely been made aware of the hard feelings 49ers players engendered with their Slip-‘N-Slidefest following Sunday’s 9-0 victory over the NFL’s Washington franchisee.
In time, it says here, the team’s launderers will forgive them.
Not so the Washington radio crew. As the 49ers expressed sheer ebullience which comes when you go to 6-0 by skunking an outgunned opponent, the tsk, tsk, tsk-ing could be heard in Monticello.
“The Niners go sliding as though they were soccer players in the left corner of the field,” says play-by-play man Larry Michael. “The clock hits zeroes and the Niners are all sliding over the field. They’re looking like a lot of fools out there.”
“AW, THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!!!!!!!”
Sorry, got a little excited there. Back to Michael and the decorum police.
“But they win the game. Final score here at FedEx Field, Niners none … Excuse me, Niners nine, and you know what? Redskins are are going to remember that one day, you watch.”
No, I’m not making this up, and this proves it:
Seems like Washington's radio announcer was a little salty about the #49ers sliding all over the field on Sunday

1: Let’s cut Mr. Michael a little slack. The team he works for has won just three playoff games since the first George Bush was a lame-duck president.
2: That said, Mr. Michael might want to take a trip down memory lane. During the early 1980s wide receivers from the Washington’s NFL franchisee — the Fun Bunch — got together and choreographed an end zone celebration. A handful of players would swing, sway, then perform a leaping group high five. At some point they even made T-shirts.
That was drawn up in advance, by Bob Fosse, if I’m not mistaken and I could be. So many people took so much umbrage at the demonstrations that the NFL banned group celebrations, by a 26-2 vote, for the 1984 season.
“It was felt that any such demonstration by players that were perceived as attempts and could provoke opponents were not good,” said a league spokesman, perhaps Michael’s grand uncle. What the 49ers did Sunday was a one-off. They were excited. Can we channel Mick Mulvaney for a spirited “Get over it”?
3: If the Patriots’ Lonie Paxton didn’t destroy the moral fiber of the NFL with his snow angel in the Tuck Rule game, these 49ers have no shot.
And 4: Washington is 1-6, the team has fired the head coach, it will be looking for to upgrade its roster come the offseason if I don’t miss my guess, and I don’t think I do. So whom exactly is going to have the institutional knowledge in the Washington facility to even think about gaining revenge on the 49ers the next time these two teams meet.
Personally, I loved the 49ers display.
And I approve of this message.
