San Mateo picks Ed Barberini as its next police chief
Current top cop Susan Manheimer to retire at year’s end
SAN MATEO – The city of San Mateo didn’t have to look far for its next chief of police.
Ed Barberini, the current San Bruno police chief, will take over as San Mateo’s top cop on Feb. 3, following Chief Susan Manheimer’s retirement on Dec. 31, the city said in a news release Friday. San Mateo police Capt. Dave Norris will serve as acting chief in the interim.
San Mateo City Manager Drew Corbett said Barberini’s law enforcement background and experience in the county made him the top pick following a months-long national search.
“He will serve as a strong leader for all aspects of the department,” Corbett said in a statement, “from ensuring we continue to recruit top talent, to maintaining our strong relationships with the community.”
Barberini has worked in law enforcement for a quarter century, including the past five years as San Bruno’s top cop. Before that, he spent 20 years with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
As San Mateo’s next chief of police, Barberini will be responsible for overseeing a roughly $47 million annual budget for a department comprising roughly 170 personnel.
“I am extremely excited to join this team and help carry on the excellent work being done, not only within the police department, but throughout the city,” Barberini said in a statement.
Barberini earned a Master of Public Administration from California State University, East Bay; a Master of Arts in Homeland Security from the Naval Post Graduate School; and a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Francisco State University.
Barberini is a life-long resident of San Mateo County and lives in Belmont with his wife, Jackie.
