San Jose: Man fires at couple in road rage shooting on Highway 101
No one was hit by the gunfire, but one woman suffered cuts when a round shattered a window in her truck.
SAN JOSE — A near-collision led to gunfire in a road rage shooting on Highway 101 in San Jose just after midnight Saturday, authorities said.
A woman riding in the truck that was struck in the shooting suffered cuts when a round shattered one of its windows, but no one was hit or otherwise injured by the gunfire, according to investigators.
California Highway Patrol Officer Ross Lee said the incident started as the victims’ Ford F-150 was in the left lane of southbound Highway 101 between Hellyer Avenue and Blossom Hill Road. A driver in a car described only as a light-colored sedan passed the truck on the right, nearly running into it in the process, Lee said.
Next, Lee said, the driver of the car slowed down to let the F-150 catch up, then “rolled down the window and fired several shots at the victims’ vehicle,” hitting it at least six times before speeding away.
The driver of the F-150, who was not injured, immediately went to a hospital, worried that his passenger had been hit, Lee said. Authorities later determined the woman had not been struck by gunfire.
Lee said authorities are classifying the shooting as a “road rage incident” because there was no indication of any other reason why the victims were targeted. The F-150 and the sedan were the only cars involved in the shooting.
Investigators have not been able to determine a detailed description of the suspect or where the sedan went after the shooting.
