When the coronavirus outbreak hit Italy and Spain, it flooded emergency rooms with patients and strained medical staffs. To offer encouragement each night, residents of both nations went to their balconies and applauded the workers’ efforts.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread in the United States, a similar show of thanks has emerged. At hospitals across the nation, first responders and others have gathered to thank doctors, nurses and other medical workers on the front lines of the coronavirus fight. In states such as New York, Oklahoma, California and Illinois, the gestures include lighting buildings up in blue, applauding the workers from outside and leaving signs of encouragement.
Closer to home, first responders from agencies such as an Jose Police Department, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell Police Department, San Jose Fire Department and Santa Clara County Fire Department lined up on Turner Drive in San Jose to greet workers on their way to work at 6:30 a.m.
Not to be outdone, medical workers around the nation went out to show their appreciation for the work.
