Redwood City: Man on probation arrested on suspicion of carjacking, other charges
REDWOOD CITY — A 25-year-old Hayward man was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges after allegedly driving a Porsche off a dealership lot and leading a chase from the Peninsula to the East Bay, authorities said Sunday.
Around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to Carlsen Porsche, 3636 Haven Ave., for a report of a carjacking by firearm. Officers soon learned a man seen loitering in the dealership service area was spoken to, responded with questions about a vehicle and brought to a sales associate who obtained keys, got into a vehicle model and started it to test it out before getting back out.
Moments later, the man reached inside his clothing and showed what the associate said looked like the outline of a handgun and demanded the keys under threat of harm, police said. When the associate complied, the man drove away with the Porsche.
Shortly after Redwood City police sent out alerts, a patrolling officer saw the Porsche driving north along Highway 101 and matched its license plate to one provided by the victim.
The officer followed at a distance until California Highway Patrol officers took over pursuit, trying to stop the Porsche in South San Francisco before it reached Highway 92 and crossed the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge. But the Porsche refused to yield to officers, and led a chase through multiple East Bay cities, putting other vehicles at risk and even ramming a CHP motorcycle officer on purpose.
CHP officers finally managed to stop the driver, later identified as Jeremy Morton, and took him into custody in Fremont. Redwood City police detectives then came to Fremont, took custody and booked him into San Mateo county jail on suspicion of carjacking.
Morton, who is on probation for felony assault in Alameda County, also faces additional charges from the CHP, including felony evading, assault with a deadly weapon against an officer, and probation violation.Anyone with information should call Redwood City police Lt. Casey Donovan at 650-780-7100.
