The iconic Meadowood resort — a gathering place for nearly 60 years — sustained extensive damage early Monday when the Glass Fire raced through the Napa Valley.
Guests and staff had been evacuated on Sunday, so they were out of harm’s way when flames reached the 250-acre property around 3 a.m. Monday, according to Brett Anderson, a representative for Pacific Union, the resort’s parent company.
“We know quite a few structures in the community have been destroyed,” he said late Monday, but added it’s difficult to assess the extent of the damage and determine which buildings are gone because access to the St. Helena property is still limited.
Besides a resort, Meadowood houses one of the Bay Area’s few three-Michelin-starred honorees, The Restaurant at Meadowood.
As “distressing” as the property losses may be, Anderson said, “Meadowood has always been about the people,” so the successful evacuation was of paramount importance, and he praised the actions of crews still battling the blaze throughout the Napa Valley. “We hope firefighters can get the upper hand soon.”
He said there’s no question of a comeback for Meadowood, which was founded in the early 1960s as a club for local vintners and then became a hotel in the 1970s.
“The Harlan family and the Kroenke family are committed to the property,” Anderson said. “Whatever it takes to rebuild and reopen, we’ll do.”
