OAKLAND — A man was killed and a woman badly injured early Monday when the stolen SUV they were in crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 880 in East Oakland, the California Highway Patrol said.
Their names have not yet been released.
The collision happened at about 1 a.m. Monday in the northbound lanes of I-880 just south of 29th Avenue.
When CHP officers got on the scene they found a Subaru Forester had crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer in the number three lane, which along with the number one and two lanes of the freeway were closed at the time for construction in the area.
The tractor-trailer was parked inside the closed off area providing materials to workers, the CHP said.
The man who was driving the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman passenger sustained major injuries and was taken to a hospital where she was in critical condition.
It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash or why the Subaru entered the closed off area, the CHP said.
The CHP said it was later determined the Subaru was reported to have been stolen, but did not say from where.
All northbound freeway traffic was diverted off the freeway at High Street for at least an hour.
All lanes were later reopened.
The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Oakland CHP Office at 510-457-2875.
