Razer releasing a second apparel lineup with an environmental theme
Razer, a lifestyle brand for gamers, is doubling down on green message with new streetwear based on Hokusai's famous print.
Green isn’t just the iconic color of Razer, the lifestyle brand for gamers is making a big push to preserve and protect the environment. This month, the company announced that it is going to be totally powered by renewable energy by 2025 and be carbon neutral by 2030.
The initiative called #GoGreenWithRazer will include a push to have its headquarters in Europe, Asia and Irvine powered by renewable energy. It’s also ensuring that its products will be recyclable by 2025. Interestingly enough, customers can dispose of or recycle Razer products through retail stores like the one in San Francisco.
The company is also partners with Conservation International to save 1 million trees in forests around the world. It’s also using its zVentures corporate arm to invest in startups focused on sustainability.
This week, it’s announcing the release of another line of clothing themed around the famous Hokusai woodblock print “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” It’s an image that’s part of popular culture and seen in everything from Pokemon T-Shirts to Godzilla posters.
Razer’s take on the print is more serious as it shows the impact plastics have on the oceans. The collection shows the “Great Wave” filled with bottles, containers and other items that make their way to the sea. The image makes a statement on how the trash ruins the beauty of the environment. To help make a difference, the products are actually made of recycled marine plastics, so that takes the debris out of oceans and uses it to make more useful products.
As part of the new line, Razer says it will recover 1 kg of plastic for each piece of clothing sold. The program is done in partnership with local organizations in Indonesia, the company says. It would be have been nice and sent a better if the products were more widely available. Unfortunately, they’re limited to 1337 pieces. For those who don’t know, “1337” is internet slang for the phrase “elite” and generally means someone who is skilled. It goes hand in hand with Razer image.
The limited edition clothing goes on sale April 7 at 7 p.m. PDT. The past apparel line from Razer was called “A Gaming Ape” and was a collaboration with A Bathing Ape, a Japanese fashion brand. The lineup sold out quickly.
