Steph Curry on verge of becoming Warriors’ all-time leading scorer
Warriors' star Steph Curry is 19 points away from surpassing Wilt Chamberlain ahead of Monday night's game against the Nuggets.
Ahead of Monday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets at Chase Center, Stephen Curry is 19 points away from surpassing Wilt Chamberlain as the Warriors’ all-time leading scorer.
Such an achievement will hold great importance to Curry, 33, who in his 12th season in Golden State is already the franchise leader in assists and made 3-pointers.
“He’s a legend and remains [one] across the whole league,” Curry said last week after a loss to the Atlanta Hawks. “But wearing a Warriors uniform and having been here my whole career, it’s pretty crazy.
“To know where it started out and all that’s happened over the course of my career… that’s a pretty significant milestone. God willing when it happens, I will appreciate that moment.”
Steph’s first hoop: Warriors teammates recall Curry’s debut, 17,695 points later
That moment could happen as soon as tonight when Curry, who has scored 30 or more points in each of his last six games, will seek to upset the fourth-place Denver Nuggets (7 p.m. PT on NBC Sports Bay Area and ESPN).
The Warriors will need more than 19 points from Curry to keep up with a Nuggets offense anchored by MVP-candidate Nikola Jokic and scores at the fourth-highest rate in the league. Meanwhile, Curry has been one of the few bright spots for Golden State’s 23rd-ranked offense. Curry is averaging 29.9 points on 48.3% shooting, 41.2% from 3-point range, 5.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists this season.
Still, this will most likely be a night crowned by Curry’s significant career achievement.
Chamberlain, who last played for the Warriors in 1965, finished his six-year stint with 17,783 points and has been the franchise leader in career points scored for 56 years. Curry will surpass Chamberlain for No. 1 on the Warriors’ all-time list, which includes Rick Barry (16,447), Paul Arizin (16,266) and Chris Mullin (16,235) to round out the top five.
