SAN MATEO — A 24-year-old woman jailed after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in connection with a three-vehicle weekend collision now faces a gross vehicular manslaughter charge Tuesday, a day after a passenger in her vehicle died, authorities said.
Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the intersection of East Santa Inez Avenue and North Humboldt Street after a report of a collision involving multiple vehicles.
When officers arrived, they found three damaged vehicles, including one driven by 24-year-old San Mateo resident Tuuika Salt. A passenger in Salt’s vehicle was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
After field sobriety and alcohol screening tests found her blood alcohol content was more than two and a half times the legal limit, Salt was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury, and booked into county jail late Sunday.
On Monday, the passenger, identified as San Mateo resident Tapaita Stovall, 40, died at the hospital. Officers arrested Salt on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.
Salt was listed in custody at the county’s Maple Street jail Tuesday night. No information was immediately available about bail or upcoming hearings.
