ANTIOCH — An Antioch man and woman were arrested on suspicion of multiple charges Tuesday after their flight from a police traffic stop ended in an injury vehicle collision, authorities said.
According to a Santa Clara County sheriff’s statement, deputies responded shortly after 10:05 p.m. Monday to Valero, 1699 South De Anza Blvd., in Cupertino for a report of an armed robbery and carjacking. There, officers learned that suspects in two vehicles came up with a long rifle to an elderly couple pumping gas.
After robbing the couple, the suspect took their vehicle and drove away. Soon after, a Los Altos Hills automated license-plate recognition camera registered the couple’s car, which deputies found abandoned. Within an hour, an Antioch camera registered a hit on an associated vehicle, leading deputies to call Antioch police for help.
Antioch police said officers found and tried to stop that vehicle at 12:23 a.m. Tuesday at Shell, 4198 Lone Tree Way, and at first found the 22-year-old driver compliant and following requests. But the driver suddenly fled the stop at high speed, leading officers on a two-mile pursuit that ended when it struck another vehicle at Laurel Road and Hillcrest Avenue, damaging both vehicles.
The victim vehicle’s driver, a 58-year-old Sacramento man, was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The pursued driver and a 22-year-old passenger, both Antioch residents, were respectively treated for non-life-threatening major and minor injuries at a hospital.
The passenger was later booked into Santa Clara County jail, and both face charges of armed robbery, carjacking and conspiracy, the sheriff’s office said.
Antioch police said California Highway Patrol officers will investigate the collision, following a protocol for law-enforcement pursuits that end in crashes.
