Is Jennifer Lopez’s big new diamond her engagement ring from 2002?
Could the diamond ring Lopez was spotted wearing on THAT finger be the same magnificent pink diamond that Affleck gave her when they first became engaged 20 years ago?
Jennifer Lopez on Thursday sent social media into a frenzy about the possibility that she and Ben Affleck have become engaged again because she was photographed while shopping wearing a very big, very sparkling stone on the ring finger of her left hand.
Both TMZ and Page Six said the stone in the photos looks like a diamond, and it’s on that finger, so, it can only mean one thing, right? The Daily Mail added: “Perhaps most interestingly,” Lopez, 52, tried to turn the ring to hide the diamond while walking out of the furniture store she was visiting Tuesday with her 14-year-old daughter, Emme.

The presence of the ring raises a number of questions beyond whether Affleck, 49, popped the question, notably: Could it be the same ring that Affleck gave Lopez when they were first engaged in 2002?
From the photos, it’s hard to tell the stone’s shape or color. Of the five engagement rings Lopez has been given by her previous partners, including rings from ex-husband Marc Anthony and ex-fiance Alex Rodriguez, her 2002 engagement ring from Affleck became famous because it showcased a very large pink diamond, which was pretty rare at the time.
The diamond was a 6.1-carat, radiant-cut, blush-colored stone from Harry Winston, according to The Adventurine, a website that covers jewelry news. The ring also featured two trapezoid white diamond stones mounted on the side of the pink stone. Affleck reportedly paid $2.5 million for it in 2002.
If the “Argo” director wanted to pop the question in 2022, it’s possible he wouldn’t need to go ring shopping again.
One report from the mid-2000s quoted a spokesperson for Harry Winston, who said that the New York jeweler had “reacquired” the pink-diamond ring after Lopez and Affleck called off their engagement in 2004, but Lopez’s former publicist, Robert Shuter, told “Access Daily” last May that the singer and actor had kept the ring, Page Six reported.
“As far as I know, Jen has never returned the ring,” Shuter told “Access Daily.” “So if things move forward with these two, gosh, she’s already got the most beautiful ring I’ve seen. It’s absolutely stunning.”
However, it should be noted that if Lopez kept it, that’s contrary to etiquette guidelines from the Emily Post Institute, Medium.com reported. When an engaged couple breaks up, the polite thing to do is to return a ring, no matter who called off the engagement. An engagement ring is a symbol of the promise to marry. “When the engagement ends, the ring goes back,” the institute said.
Perhaps, Lopez and Affleck sensed, deep down, that they would find each other again. That could be why Lopez, who currently stars in the rom-com “Marry Me,” kept the ring, or he let her keep it. In that way, it could be romantic, and even practical, if they recycled the ring from their first attempt at everlasting love.
Lopez and Affleck were initially scheduled to tie the knot in September 2003, but postponed their wedding, citing excessive media interest in their high-flying romance. The “Gigli” co-stars finally called off their engagement and broke up in 2004. Each married someone else, started a family, then divorced. They both dated or become engaged to yet more people, before rekindling their romance last spring.
An engagement at this point makes sense, given that they are reported to be in escrow for a $50 million estate in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. With 10 bedrooms and 20,000 square feet, the mansion has space for them to make a home for their blended family of five children.
In a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer for ABC News, Lopez talked about how Affleck proposed the first time, handing her a note in which he asked, “Will you marry me?” When Affleck held up the ring, Lopez said she couldn’t help but notice that it was a pink diamond — her favorite gem.
“I was just like ‘Oh God, it can’t be pink on top of it.’ That was just too much for me to handle,” Lopez told Sawyer. As she was gushing over the ring, admiring its magnificence, Affleck reminded her, “You haven’t answered me.”
After Lopez showed off her ring to Sawyer, the diamond “transformed the course of jewelry history,” The Adventurine said. In the early 2000s, Lopez’s pink diamond sparked a new fascination with rosy-colored stones.
“The couple launched pinks into the consciousness of the public and the hearts of well-heeled rock hounds,” The Adventurine said.
As diamond experts told Page Six, 90% of pink diamonds come from the Argyle mine in Australia, but because the mine announced it would close in 2020, that means the sparkler Affleck gave Lopez in 2002 may have become much more valuable. Mike Fried, CEO of The Diamond Pro, told Page Six that the ring could be worth as much as $11 million now.
The uniqueness of the pink stone is what made Affleck want to buy it for Lopez, she revealed to Sawyer. “He was like, ‘I just wanted you to have something that nobody else would have,'” Lopez said, adding that the ring is “the most magnificent thing I’ve ever seen.”
