The San Jose Sharks and Doug Wilson Jr. are parting ways.
Wilson just finished his 10th season with Sharks Sports & Entertainment and his fourth as the NHL’s team’s director of scouting, where he oversaw the scouting department, the NHL Draft, pro and amateur free agency, and the valuation analysis for player and draft pick acquisitions.
The Sharks are expected to officially announce the move later Monday. ESPN’s Kevin Weekes first reported the development.
The move allows new general manager Mike Grier to continue to put his own stamp on the organization and fill the director of scouting position with his own candidate.
Wilson led the Sharks through the NHL Draft this weekend in Montreal, where the team selected nine players. In his tenure, the Sharks’ most notable draft picks included William Eklund, Thomas Bordeleau, Mario Ferraro, Sasha Chmelevski, Ryan Merkley, Artemi Kniazev, and Ozzy Wiesblatt.
A message left with Wilson, who worked previously as the Sharks’ director of hockey operations, was not immediately returned.
After Doug Wilson stepped down as the Sharks’ general manager in April, it was unclear how the next GM would proceed with the scouting staff and other parts of the front office. In Montreal, Gilles Cote, who had been a scout with Sharks for over 20 years, announced it would be his last draft with the team.
