There is no unit hit harder by injuries during training camp than receiver because of the amount of running associated with the position.
Therefore, it’s ideal to have a deep stable of receivers during the dog days of training camp. That could explain why the Miami Dolphins are signing veteran receiver Mohamed Sanu, the day the team takes the field on Wednesday for their first training camp practice.
The signing of Sanu, who will become the 12th receiver on the camp roster, has not been made official but a deal has been finalized according to Sanu’s agent, Mike McCartney.
Sanu, a 10-year veteran who has caught 435 passes, turning them into 4,871 yards and 27 touchdowns during his NFL career, spent the past two seasons with new Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel while they were both with the San Francisco 49ers.
Last season Sanu caught 15 passes for 177 yards in the eight games he played for the 49ers. He’s respected for his understanding of NFL offenses, and for the locker room leadership he brings, which could benefit the Dolphins.
Sanu has primarily been used as a slot receiver throughout his career, but has experience working all three receiver spots during his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots.
The Dolphins signed Cedrick Wilson as a free agent this offseason with the goal of having him serve as the starting slot receiver, complementing Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But Wilson was been nursing an undisclosed injury that kept him sidelined for most of the offseason program.
It is unclear where Wilson is health-wise, and whether he’ll be a full participant in training camp.
The Dolphins also have Lynn Bowden Jr., and River Cracraft who can work inside as a slot receiver, and Erik Ezukamna, a former Texas Tech standout the team selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, could be groomed to be Hill and Waddle’s companions.
Miami also has Preston Williams, who has started games for the Dolphins, Trent Sherfield, DeVonte Dedmon, Braylon Sanders and Cody Core as the receivers on the training camp roster. The Dolphins typically keep five or six receivers on the 53-man regular-season roster, and another one or two on the practice squad.
