Paul Pelosi: What you need to know about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband
Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has a complicated history in the political world.
The Bay Area’s political world was shaken Friday morning, as Paul Pelosi, husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was hospitalized after a man assaulted him with a hammer during an invasion of the couple’s San Francisco home.
The suspect, later identified as 42-year old David Depape, reportedly shouted “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?,” during the attack. Nancy Pelosi was not at the residence at the time.
Drew Hammill, Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman, said in his statement that Paul Pelosi, 82, “is receiving excellent medical care and expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”
Paul, a longtime power player in California politics, was born in San Francisco on April 15, 1940. He remained in the city, attending St. Ignatius High School in the Sunset District until a move back east in his teenage years. Pelosi studied at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. where he met then-Nancy D’Alesandro.
The couple married in 1963 and has five children. Paul became a venture capitalist, founding Financial Leasing Services, Inc., earning a large fortune before Nancy’s political career took off, eventually leading to her election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987. They currently live in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.
Paul’s business dealings, and particularly his stock trades, have come under scrutiny in the last few years. In early 2021, he was accused of profiting off stock trades in advance of legislative moves by the Biden administration, but news reports have disproven some of those rumored trades and reported falsehoods that had circulated on social media about his trading habits. Nancy has since publicly defended elected officials rights to trade stocks, citing the “free market” as the reason behind those beliefs.
Just over two months ago, Pelosi was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges. A DUI test showed Pelosi had a blood-alcohol content of .082 when he crashed his 2021 Porsche Carrera near Yountville in Napa County.
