Amador Valley, a traditional East Bay softball power, hasn’t had a powerful start to its season.
The Pleasanton school had lost four in a row and seven of eight entering the second day of the prestigious Livermore Stampede tournament on Friday.
The Dons squeaked past Carondelet 2-1 in an early-morning game to break their losing streak.
But up next was a matchup against pool leader Archbishop Mitty, which was coming off back-to-back perfect games and three consecutive shutouts. The Monarchs had lost just once all season.
Well, let’s just say the outcome didn’t go as projected.
Amador Valley shocked Mitty 3-2, scoring a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Aleena Helms and two in the bottom of the third on Helms’ single to center.
Mitty — ranked fifth by the Bay Area News Group — had gone ahead in the visitor’s half of the third when Megan Sutton’s single knocked in Lindsey Miller and McKenna Woliczko for a 2-1 lead.
Kaylee Davis struck out seven and allowed just one earned run to pick up the victory for Amador Valley, which clinched first place in the pool when Mitty bounced back to beat Benicia 6-0 later Friday.
Amador Valley (5-8) and Mitty each finished 2-1 in pool play. Benicia was 1-1-1.
The tournament concludes Saturday.
