Jets to sign DT Al Woods: source

Earlier this week, the Jets added tackle Billy Turner to their roster.

On Wednesday, Gang Green made another addition, this time on the defensive side of the ball.

The Jets are set to sign veteran defensive tackle Al Woods, according to a league source. Earlier this offseason, the Jets signed defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson, who can play both on the inside and as a defensive end. Now the Jets will add more depth at defensive tackle after Sheldon Rankins departed to the Texans this offseason.

Woods, 36, has played for five different franchises (Buccaneers, Seahawks, Steelers, Titans and Colts) throughout his 12-year NFL career. He spent the last three seasons with the Seahawks, starting 30 games over the previous two years. During that span, Woods recorded 53 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

The Jets still needed defensive tackle help following the first few waves of free agency. The team attempted to sign Calais Campbell, but he signed a one-year contract with the Falcons instead. Gang Green also targeted Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox before he re-signed with the team.

Woods is not a guy that gets tremendous pressure as a pass rusher. However, at 6-4, 330 pounds, Woods is a run-stopper who should only help a defense that finished fourth in the league in yards and points allowed last season.
