Man pleads not guilty in beating death of 65-year-old Monterey County woman
Kevin Hart of Paterson and Jackie Robinson’s daughter were in a dating relationship for about a decade, but it is unclear what triggered the attack, police say
SEASIDE – A man accused of beating his girlfriend’s mother in Seaside resulting in her death last week was in court Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to her slaying, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a felony, and resisting arrest.
At about 4:30 p.m. last Friday, Seaside police received multiple calls of a peace disturbance in the 1200 block of Hamilton Avenue, said Police Chief Nick Borges.
When officers arrived, they contacted Kevin Hart, 45, at the front door of the woman’s apartment. Officers saw Jackie Robinson, 65, laying on the ground with severe head injuries, said Borges. Hart became combative and began attacking the officers, and he was quickly overpowered and detained.
The incident reportedly took place at Robinson’s home where Hart, of Patterson, was visiting when the alleged attack took place.
Hart and Robinson’s daughter were in a dating relationship for about a decade, said Borges, who added it is unclear what triggered the attack. He said the Seaside Police Department has not received any information to indicate Hart had been violent with Robinson in the past.
Seaside police, fire personnel and emergency medical services attempted life-saving measures and Robinson was taken to a nearby hospital.
“Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries,” said Borges in an email. “This is the first homicide in Seaside since 2019. Every life taken, we take personally. We wish this could have been prevented. The case is now in the hands of the District Attorney’s Office and we have full confidence they, as they do regularly, will pursue justice.”
According to Monterey County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Nichole Reed, Kevin Hart is being held in Monterey County Jail on $2 million bail and his preliminary hearing setting is scheduled for May 24, at 8:30 a.m.
