Shooting prompts closure of Highway 1 Friday night
Santa Cruz County sheriff deputies and Santa Cruz Highway Patrol responded to a shooting Friday night at the Freedom Boulevard exit on southbound Highway 1, according to a social media post. The incident caused a partial closure of the highway between Friday night and early Saturday morning.
FREEDOM — Santa Cruz County sheriff deputies and Santa Cruz Highway Patrol responded to a shooting around 8:40 p.m. Friday near the Freedom Boulevard exit on southbound Highway 1, according to a statement posted on the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office social media page.
The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. and caused a partial closure of the highway between Friday night and early Saturday morning. According to the Sheriff Department’s statement, a black or dark gray Acura MDX sport utility vehicle was driving erratically on southbound Highway 1. The driver of the vehicle, reported by the Sheriff’s Office to be a Black adult male with long hair, collided with a second vehicle. Both cars then exited the highway at Freedom Boulevard.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that after exiting the highway, the driver of the Acura MDX fired multiple shots at the driver of the second vehicle and juvenile passenger.
The driver of the second vehicle and passenger were injured during the incident, but the Sheriff’s Office did not elaborate about the injuries. According to the statement, the driver and passenger of the second vehicle were transported to an undisclosed hospital outside of the county and were later released.
A Blue Honda Accord was also seen near the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office, and detectives are attempting to locate the driver. The Sheriff’s Office also requests that anyone with dashcam footage in the area recorded between 8:20 and 9 p.m. should notify deputies.
