Prep roundup: Monte Vista routs James Logan in boys basketball, improves to 15-1
Salesian, Branham, Benicia, Miramonte among Friday's boys basketball winners. Priory, Lynbrook, Half Moon Bay, Christopher win in girls basketball.
Boys basketball
No. 3 Monte Vista 70, James Logan 27
Eleven months after its season ended in the section playoffs with a stunning loss at home to James Logan, Monte Vista left no doubt about the outcome Friday night.
The Mustangs, playing on the road in Union City, improved to 15-1 as Daniel Cojocaru scored 16 points and Alex Long added 11 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Bay Area News Group’s third-ranked team.
Monte Vista led 22-13 after the first quarter and 32-14 at halftime. The Mustangs turned the game into a total rout in the third quarter, scoring 25 points to stretch their advantage to 57-22.
Uynam Trinh scored 10 points for Logan, which fell to 3-12.
The nonleague game was Monte Vista’s final dress rehearsal before opening East Bay Athletic League on Tuesday at second-ranked De La Salle.
Monte Vista has won five in a row since its only loss, 58-54 at St. Mary’s-Stockton on Dec. 22.
No. 1 Salesian 76, Pinole Valley 29
Salesian extended its winning streak to three games while improving to 15-1 as the Pride cruised on the road over Pinole Valley in a Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division game.
Carlton Perrilliat (11 points), Zion Yeargin (10 points) and Elias Obenyah (10 points) scored in double figures for Salesian, which improved to 2-0 in league play.
Nnamdi Osajindu (nine points) and Chriseanie Nealy (eight points) led Pinole Valley, which slipped to 7-10, 0-2.
Salesian has league games next week against St. Mary’s-Berkeley and St. Patrick-St. Vincent before a nonleague showdown against Archbishop Riordan in the MLK Classic at De La Salle on Jan. 15.
No. 19 Branham 56, Christopher 53
It wasn’t easy, but Branham found a way to extend its winning streak to nine games with a victory on the road over Christopher in Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division play.
The Bruins, in their first season under former West Valley College assistant and Milpitas High star Jason Billie, got 18 points from Wyatt Sparling, 15 from Ben Lim and 11 from Cayden Tanger.
Branham improved to 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Christopher dropped to 4-7, 0-1.
Benicia 52, No. 20 Liberty 46
Benicia tightened its defense in the fourth quarter to prevail at home over Liberty in a nonleague game as three players — Dominick Dennis, Ayden Thompson and Kenneth Brown — scored 10 points each to lead the way.
Jackdan Eyike chipped in with nine points as the Panthers improved to 8-4.
Trailing 19-16 at halftime and 36-35 after three quarters, Benicia outscored the visitors 17-10 in the fourth period to bounce back from an overtime loss to Fairfield last week.
Dennis scored all of his points in the final quarter.
Liberty got 17 points from Gavin Cook Whisenton — all in the second half — and 11 points from Cameron Johnson. Andrew Vixon added nine points for the Lions (11-3).
Miramonte 61, San Rafael 40
Marcus Robinson made seven 3-pointers and finished with 32 points, three assists and three steals as Miramonte rolled past host San Rafael in a nonleague game.
The Mats also got 11 points, six rebounds and two assists from Chase Miller and seven points and three assists from Preston Rguem as they improved to 11-3.
San Rafael is 5-11.
Miramonte has league games next week against College Park and Concord before it plays host to its Martin Luther King-John Lewis Memorial showcase on Jan. 13. The Mats will play Archie Williams in the fourth of six games in the showcase.
Mountain View 73, Wilcox 62
Mountain View evened its Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division record at 1-1 as Jayden Minor scored 22 points and Jaden Feller added 16 to lead the Spartans to a victory on the road over Wilcox.
Coming off a loss to Los Gatos on Wednesday, Mountain View built a 39-28 halftime advantage and widened the margin to 60-42 after three quarters.
The Spartans also got 12 points from Dylan Louie as they improved their overall record to 10-4.
Braden Rosa (15 points) and Tyson Bonilla (13 points) scored in double figures for Wilcox, which fell to 5-7, 0-2.
Milpitas 56, Gunn 55
With the score tied and 3.8 seconds left, Jacob Wrencher, a 6-6 junior, was fouled and made one of two free throws to provide the winning margin for Milpitas (10-3, 1-0 SCVAL De Anza).
Dylan Nguyen led Milpitas with 13 points and nine rebounds. Isaac Sisay added 10 points and five rebounds and Wrencher finished with eight points and five assists.
James Ford scored 21 for Gunn (8-4, 1-1).
Girls basketball
No. 16 Priory 85, Westmoor 18
Six Priory players scored in double figures as the Panthers (6-2) breezed at home in nonleague play over Westmoor.
Natalie Neumann was 5 of 10 from 3-point range and finished with 17 points and Vienn Sheng made four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points to help lead the way. Neumann and Sheng are transfers from Palo Alto.
Priory also got 13 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and six steals from Ugreat Daniels, 12 points and four steals from Sasha Johnson, 11 points and five assists from Adelaide Chan and 10 points and four rebounds from Jordyn Moss.
The Panthers will return home on Saturday for their Priory Winter Classic. They play San Joaquin Memorial at 2:30 p.m.
Christopher 69, Andrew Hill 35
Christopher improved to 14-0 with a nonleague victory on the road over Andrew Hill as Kaycee Carrasco (17 points) and Nat Javier (11 points) scored in double figures for the winning side.
The Cougars also got eight points each from Frenchy Falvey and Mackenzie Garrido.
Jeselle Tu scored nine points and Lian Ow added eight points for Andrew Hill (6-6).
Half Moon Bay 61, Burlingame 43
Leading 30-25 at halftime, Half Moon Bay outscored Burlingame 23-8 in the third quarter to break open the nonleague game as the host Cougars upped their record to 10-2.
Delaney Dorwin scored 29 points to lead HMB.
Miranda Sibley had 12 points — all on 3-pointers — for Burlingame, which dropped to 8-4.
Lynbrook 58, Homestead 42
Lynbrook surged to a 31-19 halftime lead on its way to a victory on the road over Homestead in SCVAL De Anza Division play. The Vikings improved to 10-3, 1-1. Homestead fell to 5-9, 1-1.
Boys soccer
No. 6 De La Salle 1, James Logan 0
William Evans scored the game’s only goal as De La Salle prevailed at home in nonleague play to improve to 4-2-1. James Logan is 8-5-1.
