Every Child a Reader receives state's Golden Bell Award.

CUSD wins state award

Campbell Union School District’s Every Child a Reader by 3rd Grade (ECaR3) was recently named a 2023 Golden Bell Award winner.

The award, given by the California School Boards Association, recognizes outstanding programs and governance practices in school districts throughout California.

District educators were facing the reality that certain student groups—including English-language learners, students with disabilities and those from low socioeconomic households—were experiencing persistent literacy gaps. That fact led the district to transform how reading is taught, said Whitney Holton, associate superintendent of teaching and learning.

“We launched our Every Child a Reader by 3rd Grade initiative to transparently address inequities and increase educational outcomes for all,” she said in a statement. “Data from our work shows that ECaR3 is empowering teachers and raising literacy levels and achievement not only for English learners and students with disabilities but for all students. Data demonstrates evidence of growth for advanced learners that is exceeding statewide trends.”

The Golden Bell Awards ceremony was held Nov. 30 in San Francisco.

Korean showcase

The Campbell Express Library is hosting a performance by the Korean Cultural Center- Urisawe on Jan. 26, 4-5 p.m. The center is dedicated to promoting and cultivating Korean cultural awareness through performing arts.

The showcase will include traditional dances and music, featuring twirling the Sangmo (a hat with paper streamers) and the Buna (a dish) and a mask dance, or Talchum.
