The 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i Luxury Performance SUV

What is an X7? The X7 is a full size luxury 3 row SUV built in the Spartanburg, SC USA assembly plant and sold in North America by BMW. The X7 is the largest vehicle BMW makes and is the brand’s flag ship model. The range of features and upscale options put the X7 in the upper level luxury class and is BMW’s most powerful and sporty SUV.

The BMW X7 40i features top tier finishes, expert engineering and spacious freedom for driving comfort; inside and out. The 2023 BMW X7 starts at $77,850 for the base xDrive 40i model and the window sticker goes up to $103,100 for the V8 powered M60i edition.

For 2023, the BMW X7 received a mid cycle refresh, that includes a more expressive front end, a new dashboard design with a huge digital display and the latest info systems. The X7 now has more standard features and new driver assistance technology.

This week BMW sent me a 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i SUV to test drive and review. The base window sticker price for this 40i model is $77,850. The options on the test SUV are: the Merino leather interior package for $1,950, the dynamic handling package for $3,300, the driving assistance package for $1,700, the parking assistance package for $900, the executive package for $3,950, the climate comfort package for $1,600, the 23″ tire and alloy wheel package for $2,660 and the leather covered dashboard for $900. The MSRP manufactures suggested retail price, including the $995 destination charge, is: $95,745.

After adding in the state and local sales tax, plus the DMV and dealers fees, the out the door and in your garage total purchase price came to: $107,713. At close to $108,000, this BMW X7 is a top of the line luxury SUV with a smooth blend of power, versatility and space that makes the X7 a great buy compared to all of its direct German competitors.

BMW X7 power and performance start with the entry level xDrive40i’s 3.0L liter twin turbo inline 6 cylinder 24 valve gas engine with 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The engine is bolted to an 8 speed automatic sport transmission, with a 48 volt mild hybrid system, routed into an xDrive  all wheel drive performance traction control system, with driving dynamic control and three selectable driving modes.

Ride, handling and braking are enhanced by dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, a self leveling air suspension system, 4 wheel ventilated ABS anti-lock disc brakes with dynamic braking control and cornering brake controls. These performance sport systems make the X7 handle like a race car, on the street and track.  It still can make the weekend run to Home Depot and then on to Target for the big bulk buys.

BMW’s driving mode options consist of Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro. They adjust vehicle characteristics, such as acceleration, engine sound, interior lighting and handling that make for a sportier driving experience. Individual Sport mode changes can be made to the drive system; changing driving dynamics and steering, while the Sports Plus setting also restricts dynamic stability and anti-lock braking for superior road or on-track control.

The X7’s interior is at the top of the charts for comfort, climate control and technology starting with the heated and cooled cup holders and the 5 zone temperature settings.  The Harman Kardon surround sound audio system, with 464 watts of power and 16 speakers sound like an in-theater experience as you listen to all your favorite playlist tunes.

Luxury upgrades include: heated and cooled massaging front leather seats with memory, heated and cooled rear leather seats, head up display, SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, remote engine start, 3rd row seating, 4 corner air suspension, a panoramic moonroof, rain sensing windshield wipers, a 3 spoke leather wrapped and heated sport steering wheel, heated front arm rests, adaptive LED headlights, front collision warning, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, a rear view camera, a 48 volt mild hybrid system with stop and go and a 3D surround view exterior camera.
