SF Giants sell at trade deadline, trading Doval, Yastrzemski
A day after trading longtime reliever Tyler Rogers to the New York Mets, the Giants have traded one-time All-Star closer Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals, according to multiple reports.
The team has yet to announce either move.
San Francisco received a quartet of prospects in exchange for Doval: right-hander Trystan Vrieling, catcher/infielder Jesus Rodriguez, infielder Parks Harber and left-hander Carlos De La Rosa, per multiple reports. Vrieling and Rodriguez were the Yankees’ No. 19 and No. 25 prospects, per MLB Pipeline.
For Yastrzemski, the Giants received right-hander Yunior Marte — a different Yunior Marte from the one who was part of the trade for left-hander Erik Miller.
The Giants were expected to add, not subtract, at the trade deadline, but the team transitioned to sellers amidst an abysmal stretch of baseball. After being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Giants (54-55) are below .500 for the first time all season. They’ve lost six straight games, as well as 12 of their last 14 games.
With Doval and Rogers gone, All-Star Randy Rodríguez stands to take over as the Giants’ closer. This season, Rodríguez has a 1.20 ERA over 45 innings with 62 strikeouts.
With Doval, Rogers and Yastrzemski being traded, two-time All-Star Logan Webb and designated hitter Wilmer Flores are the only two players remaining on the roster who played alongside Buster Posey. The Giants also designated first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment back in June before trading him to the Los Angeles Angels.
Despite trading Doval, Rogers and Yastrzemski, the Giants elected to retain three upcoming free agents in Flores, Justin Verlander and Dominic Smith.
Doval, 28, spent the entirety of his professional career with the Giants dating back to when he signed with the team as an international free agent in October 2015. Over five seasons, Doval had a 3.29 ERA and totaled 107 saves, the seventh-most in Giants history. This season, Doval has a 3.09 ERA over 46 2/3 innings with 15 saves.
In New York, Doval will join a Yankees bullpen that added All-Star closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, as well as the Colorado Rockies’ Jake Bird. Doval still has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining and will not become a free agent until after the 2027 season.
The right-hander emerged as the Giants’ closer at the tail end of the 2021 season, then held that role down for most of the next four season. Doval lost the closer role last August when he was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, but stepped back into the role this season amidst Ryan Walker’s struggles.
Yastrzemski spent six years in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system before being traded to the Giants in March 2019. Despite not making his debut until he was 28, Yastrzemski established himself as a mainstay in San Francisco’s outfield and played 790 games over seven major-league seasons. During that time, Yastrzemski hit 114 home runs and posted a .768 OPS.
The 34-year-old Yastrzemski is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career this offseason.
