What to know before Stanford faces Virginia in ACC play

0

STANFORD AT VIRGINIA

Records: Stanford 1-2, 1-0 ACC; Virginia 2-1, 0-0

Kickoff: 4:30 p.m. at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia

TV: ACC Network

Radio: KNBR 1050 AM

Series history: First meeting

Stanford storylines: After opening the season with losses at Hawaii and BYU, Stanford shocked Boston College at Stanford Stadium, shutting the Eagles out in the second half and converting three turnovers into 21 points to give interim coach Frank Reich his first collegiate win. … A Cardinal defense allowing its fewest rushing yards per game since 2013 and recording nine sacks will now face a Virginia offense that is eighth in the country in rushing yards (266.7) and hasn’t allowed a sack.

Virginia storylines: The Cavs have made steady progress in each season under Tony Elliott, a longtime Clemson assistant, going from 1-6 to 2-6 to 3-5 in the ACC, but it’s not clear if this is the year Virginia can leap into the top half of the conference. It has beat up on two lower-level opponents but has lost its only Power Four matchup this season, 35-31, at N.C. State (although both teams are in the ACC, it was a non-conference matchup). … The Cavs have won 11 of their last 15 night games at Scott Stadium.

Stats that matter: Stanford will be playing in its fourth time zone in four games. … Virginia’s offense ranks eighth in the country at 556 yards per game, and it is the only team with 800 rushing yards and 860 passing yards. … Stanford is one of just 11 FBS teams with two defensive touchdowns. … Three different Cavs have run for more than 100 yards in a game this season.
