Dramatic finish: San Jose State wins on Lynch’s 48-yard field goal
SAN JOSE — After missing all four of his previous field-goal attempts on the season, San Jose State’s Denis Lynch picked a great time to make his first.
The 5-foot-7 senior nailed a 48-yard field goal with seven seconds left to lift the Spartans to a 31-28 victory over Idaho before an announced crowd of 13,155 at CEFCU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Yes, Idaho is just an FCS school.
But before Lynch could become the hero, previously winless San Jose State had to overcome a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter and 28-21 hole in the fourth period.
A 1-yard run by Floyd Chalk IV tied the score 28-28 with 5:21 left. The Spartans then got a stop and drove 31 yards to set up Lynch for the winner.
San Jose State’s Walker Eget completed 13 of 22 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. Chalk IV ran for two touchdowns and Jabari Bates rushed for one.
After opening the season with losses to Central Michigan and Texas, the Spartans improved to 1-2.
Idaho is 2-2.
