49ers-Browns live updates: Niners lead in windy Cleveland

Some 49ers are going to be colder than others.

The following 49ers (8-4) were on the inactive list upon arrival for today’s game against the host Cleveland Browns (3-8):

— Defensive tackle Kevin Givens.

— Wide receiver Jordan Watkins

— Running back Jordan James

— Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu

— Linebacker Tatum Bethune

— Kicker Eddy Piñeiro

Although the forecast called or the possibility of snow and freezing rain, there wasn’t either as the 49ers were attempting to get loose with the temperature at 36 degrees and winds gusting at 30 to 40 miles per hour.

The last time the 49ers played in Cleveland in October of 2023, it was a relatively balmy 53 degrees at kickoff with winds at 15 miles per hour and some rain. The Browns upset the 49ers 19-17 with reserve quarterback P.J. Wright as the starter. For the 49ers, it was their first loss of the season after five wins and began a three-game losing streak.

“I mean, last time we went, they had a really good defense and this time they have a really good defense, if not better,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. “The rain wasn’t great then. It’ll probably be worse now. So, we’ve got to be prepared for it. It’s like that this time of the year and hopefully we’ll get lucky with weather, but we’re assuming the worst.”

Quarterback Brock Purdy was 12 of 27 for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception but did manage to move the 49ers to the Cleveland 23-yard line with nine seconds to play before Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal.

The 49ers enter the game as the No. 7 overall seed in the NFC, ahead of both the Detroit Lions (7-5) and Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) and have an 8-2 conference record as opposed to 4-4 for Detroit and 3-4-1 for Dallas, both of which played on Thanksgiving.

The 49ers hope to improve to a surprising 9-4 going into their Week 14 bye. When the schedule resumes, they’ll host Tennessee on Dec. 14 and a rough three-game stretch to close the season at Indianapolis (8-3), and home games against Chicago (9-3) and Seattle (8-3).

Inactives for Cleveland are guard Zak Zinter, tackle Cornelius Lucas, wide receiver Jamari Thrash, tight end Brendan Bates, defensive end Alex Wright and defensive tackle Adin Huntington.
