– Ale noted that many borehole projects do not last more than a year after commissioning because they are not designed to meet standard
An earthquake and a sea intrusion may hit different parts of Nigeria, the national president of the Association of Water-well Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), Michael Ale, has warned.
Ale gave the warning in a communiqué issued in Ibadan, Oyo state saying these disasters could be the result of a proliferation of indiscriminate boreholes across the country.
The association warned state governments to make an urgent move to curb the practice, according to a report by The Nation.
Ale warned that an earth tremor which recently occurred in the Saki area of Oyo state was because of illegal drilling of boreholes and that this could lead to major disasters if not well handled.
“AWDROP has observed indiscriminate drilling practice persistent in all nooks and crannies of the country and the industry is being turned into an all comers affairs.
“AWDROP is set to enforce the power vested on it by the National Council of Water Resources (NCWR) to partner with state governments on the rejuvenation and revitalisation of abandoned boreholes and the application and enforcement of code of practice on borehole drilling among drilling practitioners.

“AWDROP hereby directs all its state chapters to partner with their respective state government to ensure the implementation of the code of practice in borehole drilling, using best subjected practice judgment.
“Indication is that all borehole drilling contractors must be registered by agencies in their respective states, pay their registration fees and obtain a drilling permit before any drilling operation.
“Borehole projects are to be strictly supervised by a Comeg-registered geologist or hydro geologist,” Ale said.
While noting lack of proper coordination among relevant agencies, Ale noted that many borehole projects do not last more than a year after commissioning because they are not designed to meet with the current standards to benefit communities.
