Man shot after firing at officers while being served arrest warrant in North Linden
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- One man is in stable condition after a shootout with Columbus police officers in North Linden Sunday morning.
A sergeant with Columbus police told NBC4 officers received a 911 call at 9 a.m. The caller said there was a man, later identified as 22-year-old Rodriguez Fitzgerald, who had multiple felony warrants inside a home on the 2900 block of Azelda Street. Police said the warrants included felonious assault, discharge into a habitation, aggravated menacing, and domestic violence.
According to police, Fitzgerald said he intended to have a shootout with police.
SWAT officers were sent to Azelda Street to serve an arrest warrant and reported that Fitzgerald left the house and began firing at the officers just before 12 p.m.
Police confirmed an officer shot Fitzgerald, and officers then gave him medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Fitzgerald was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition, but later upgraded to stable condition and is expected to recover, according to a Columbus police sergeant at the scene.
No one else was injured in the shooting, police said.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has begun its investigation.
Columbus police said Fitzgerald will be charged with felonious assault against a police officer. Police did not identify the officer who fired his weapon.
