Central Ohio churches collect supplies for Texas
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) — After a few days of collection, donations dropped off at some central Ohio churches for flood relief will soon be on their way to central Texas.
“This is just humanity helping each other," said Pastor Philip Bassham of Discovery Church in Gahanna.
The church served as a collection site this week. Washington Court House-based Day 41 Disaster Relief will be taking everything that's been donated to central Texas, more than 1,300 miles way.
“Whenever you have a lot of people doing a little, it's a cumulative effect," Bassham said.
Bassham knows what it's like to deal with drastic life changes caused by severe weather. His house was destroyed by a tornado last year. So when Day 41 approached him about being a drop off site, he said it was an easy "yes."
“Absolutely we’re going to do this and we’re going to make sure it happens because I know what it feels like to be on that receiving side of that blessing but also going through a tragedy it’s like you see, like I said, the beauty of humanity," Bassham said.
The Naz Church in Grove City was the other collection site. Necessities piled up there over the past few days. There were also stacks of supplies by the front door at Discovery.
TPC Food Service on Friday dropped off pallets of cleaning supplies and 13 pallets of water. Noble Cut Distillery, which is right next to Discovery Church, has more equipment and space. So they helped out with unloading and storage.
“It’s one of those, it’s such a microscopic thing we’re, in the grand scheme, that we’re doing but it’s one of those anything we can do to help and we’re happy to do that. and to be a part of something. It's not about us it about helping those people," said Craig Saarie, Head of Production at Noble Cut Distillery.
Day 41 planned to pick up the supplies this weekend, organize them, then bring them to Texas.
“It's just sad to see that but we want to do everything we can to bring hope to people and to realize that there is people that love them and are coming alongside them," Bassham said.
