Central Ohio families enjoy summer fun at Zoom Duck Derby
POWELL, Ohio (WCMH) -- Sunday was the 9th annual Zoom Duck Derby at Zoombezi Bay near the Columbus Zoo.
The event has people buy rubber ducks that will race against each other to raise money for the Alpha Group, supporting those in the central Ohio community with developmental disabilities.
The non-profit has programs and services in 13 counties throughout central Ohio, all working to create job opportunities, provide travel to medical appointments and more for the people they serve.
“Hopefully they've learned a little bit about our organization, but if not, hopefully they get the opportunity to reach out and to ask somebody,” said the CEO of the group, Liz Owens-Detillion.
Last year, 6,000 ducks were sold and nearly $30,000 raised. This year, their sales increased with 7,000 ducks racing down the lazy river. Owens-Detillion shared it's always exhilarating to see the community come out and support their cause every year.
“I think it's an awesome opportunity to give the community a way to see the individuals that we get to serve,” Owens-Detillion said. “We get out in our community; we can get back to one of our local parks and give them some business as well.”
The group hopes to continue growing the event and they have set a goal to sell 10,000 ducks at next year's race.
