Victims in fiery far north Columbus crash were recent Scioto High School grads
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The two victims in a fiery far north Columbus crash on Sunday were recent graduates of Dublin Scioto High School, according to a statement from the school's principal.
"It is with profound sadness that we share news of a tragic loss in our school community," Principal Tom Cochran said in a letter to families. "On Sunday, two recent Scioto High School graduates from the Class of 2025 lost their lives following a serious car accident."
Cochran said a current student was also injured in the crash.
The crash happened on Sawmill Road north of Sawmill Drive when an adult driving lost control of the car and hit a utility pole, Columbus police said. The car caught fire. One juvenile was in the passenger seat, and another was in the rear seat. Watch previous coverage in the player above.
The driver and front passenger were killed in the crash. The juvenile in the rear seat was hospitalized and is expected to survive, according to police.
The principal said the names of those involved are not being released at this time due to the police investigation and out of respect for the families.
"Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those lost, and to all members of the Irish community who knew and loved them," Cochran said. "The loss of two young lives so full of promise is heartbreaking, and we know this news will be difficult for many."
Cochran said counselors and support professionals were available on Monday and Tuesday for students. He encouraged students to use the resources available to them, including the 988 Crisis Lifeline, and to talk openly about their feelings.
The crash remained under investigation.
