Ohio State head coach Ryan Day to discuss Buckeyes progress at fall camp
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- In less than one month, the Ohio State Buckeyes will take the field against the Texas Longhorns to open the 2025 season. Preparations are well underway to see who will get the nods to start in the regular season opener.
Head coach Ryan Day will provide an update on which Buckeyes players have impressed and the goals for the team for this season's fall camp, which began Thursday morning. Day is addressing the media. You can watch his comments live in the video player above.
Many members of the 2024 national championship team are now training with their NFL rosters and Buckeyes fans will soon get to know many of the new starters.
The quarterback competition is restarting between sophomore Julian Sayin, junior Lincoln Kienholz, and freshman Tavien St. Clair. Day said all three each have more command over the huddle after seeing them practice Thursday.
Day held steady on naming starters or giving out any concrete evaluations as Thursday's practice did not include running plays with pads.
"Give me four or five days," said Day regarding quarterback evaluation. "If we have to go into week one with multiple quarterbacks, that is probably not a good thing but you never know with these things."
The running back room also has many new faces with transfer CJ Donaldson forming a duo alongside James Peoples.
The defensive line will certainly have many new faces after stars Tyleik Williams, Jack Sawyer, Ty Hamilton, and JT Tuimoloau were drafted by NFL teams. The competition for the starting roles on the line is crowded with plenty of juniors and freshmen.
One of the players competing is Eddrick Houston, who apparently suffered an injury during Thursday's practice. Day said during the news conference the severity of the injury is unknown at this time.
This season, Ohio State will look to join Georgia as the second team in the 2020s to win back-to-back national championships. This season’s 12-team College Football Playoff will be seeded on rankings, with conference champions no longer earning byes into the quarterfinals.
Outside of the ultimate goal of winning another national championship, the Buckeyes will try to win their first Big Ten championship since 2020. Oregon enters as the defending conference champion after finishing the regular season 13-0 and beating Penn State in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis.
Ohio State kicks off its 2025 season on Aug. 30 when it hosts Texas at Ohio Stadium in a rematch of last year’s Cotton Bowl semifinal. The game will kick off at noon and is likely to be a top-five matchup. Day stressed how Week 1 being a top-tier opponent makes this month's preparations even more crucial.
"You can't be quote-on-quote 'Learning the job' in that first week. We got to be going," said Day. "This game matters in a big way and a loss can hurt and a win can really propel you."
The preseason Associated Press rankings are expected to be released on Aug. 11 with the USA Today coaches rankings potentially dropping on Monday.
