'We need action!' Mike Johnson called out by California Republican targeted by Dems
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) took to X to rage against California Democrats' planned mid-decade redistricting, which seeks to draw out up to five Republican lawmakers in retaliation for the Texas GOP's plan to draw out up to five Democrats — but Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) called him out for being all talk and no substance.
"Gavin Newsom’s latest attempt to disenfranchise millions of California voters was written in the dark of night by the DCCC — more than 2,700 miles away from Sacramento in Washington," wrote Johnson. "Unlike other states, California must shred its own Constitution to succeed in its desperate gambit to ‘end the Trump presidency.’ Voters in California and across the nation see through this partisan stunt."
"Gavin Newsom should spend less time trampling his state’s laws for a blatant power grab, and more time working to change the disastrous, far-left policies that are destroying California," Johnson continued. "Newsom obviously wants to launch a presidential campaign on the backs of disenfranchised California voters, but it will not work."
But Kiley, who represents one of the Republican-favoring districts targeted for elimination, pointed out that Johnson wasn't exactly doing anything to stop him.
"Mr. Speaker, these are nice words but we need action," wrote Kiley. "You can stop Newsom's Redistricting Sham and save our taxpayers $250 million by bringing my mid-decade redistricting bill to the Floor."
This follows Kiley's pronouncement on MSNBC last week that he wants to stop both the California and Texas district-rigging schemes.
"If we continue down this path, it's just going to be this arms race, this redistricting war, mutually assured destruction," Kiley told anchor Antonia Hylton. "It's going to be bad for voters. It's going to be bad for representation. It's certainly going to be bad for our country. And, you know, at the end of the day, the whole thing might be a wash anyway. So what is — what is really the point?"
