College Hoops Today: Bethune-Cookman Is Getting Better

0

This week, UNC guard Seth Trimble suffered a broken forearm that will sideline him indefinitely; Tucker DeVries had a huge first half as Indiana piled up the points in beating Marquette (see below for more about him); and Cameron Boozer (who had to be motivated by his coach just last week) and his twin Cayden got off to a sweet start in their home debut for Duke. Other college basketball stories we’re tracking include…

Jakobi Heady Leads the Wildcats

Back in 2021-22, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats bottomed out with a mere nine wins. They’ve been on the rise since, improving to 12 victories in 2022-23, finishing .500 the following season, and last season actually boasting a winning record for the first time since 2019-20.

Okay, so they’ve still never made the NCAA tourney in their 45-year existence, but, hey… baby steps, right?

Well, Bethune-Cookman began this season by almost pulling off a miracle against Auburn, ultimately losing in OT, so in the next game it wasn’t much of a surprise when Miami easily covered the spread. Obviously, the Hurricanes were not taking the Wildcats lightly.

And although the loss to Miami dropped Bethune to 0-2, the news wasn’t all bad. Senior guard Jakobi Heady, who shot poorly in only managing nine points in the season debut, stepped up with 19 points (in the process, reaching 1,000 for his career), four treys and two assists in just 25 minutes to pace the ‘Cats.

He came to Bethune-Cookman for his junior season after spending two campaigns at a Juco school, and was superb (see video below for highlights of his first tenure with the Wildcats). But Heady regressed slightly (at least in terms of scoring) after transferring to Central Michigan for his senior campaign. Well, he’s back in Bethune now as a fifth-year senior, and while his PT is down early on, the effort against Miami was a promising sign of things to come for his final collegiate season.

Heady leads the Wildcats with 14 PPG so far and he’s likely poised for a big game Tuesday against an NAIA school. The 6’6”, 200-pound Chicago native is draft eligible in 2026, but the swingman isn’t likely to get a sniff from an NBA team unless something dramatic happens this season.

Tucker DeVries Can’t Miss

Since winning 23 games in 2022-23, it’s been a bit of a slog for the Indiana Hoosiers. They’ve failed to reach 20 wins in each of the past two seasons, missing the NCAA tourney both times.

However, Indiana is off to a fine start this season, easily overpowering Alabama A&M in the opener and – as mentioned above – going off offensively against Marquette on Sunday in a 100-77 win. While the Hoosiers are not ranked among the top 25, they are starting to open some eyes, as evidenced by their +5000 line at FanDuel to win the national championship – better odds than powerhouses like Wisconsin and Michigan State.

As we discussed in the intro, senior forward DeVries came up huge on Sunday, piling up 24 of his 27 points in the first half, adding six treys and a steal in his 30 minutes of action for the game.

The fifth-year player got better in each of his three seasons at Drake before transferring to West Virginia for 2024-25. Unfortunately, things did not go well for DeVries with the Mountaineers as he struggled in his limited action before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery.

He transferred to Indiana and so far looks better than ever, even though he’s seeing fewer minutes early on (four trouble on Sunday is a big reason for this). DeVries is getting more touches and his outside game has gone to a whole new level. He’s not getting to the line much so far, but has made up for that with the best rebounding work of his career and more assists, to boot.

DeVries, a 6’7” wing, couldn’t miss in the first half on Sunday, canning 8-of-12 shots, including a ridiculous 5-of-7 from downtown. If this dude stays healthy this season, he’s a sleeper NBA draft prospect given his tremendous outside touch and strong build (225 pounds).

Right now, DeVries looks more like an UDFA, but if he keeps lighting it up, he will force his way into a late second round projection, at the very least.

RotoRob Tune of the Day

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club got its name from Marlon Brando’s biker club in The Wild One. Here’s “Weapon of Choice,” another track from their 2007 album, Baby 81.
