Brand New Hamilton Song Released By Lin-Manuel Miranda
Lin-Manuel Miranda has released a brand new, never before heard song from his smash hit musical Hamilton. Opening on Broadway in 2015, Hamilton became a cultural phenomenon unlike any other, largely thanks to Miranda's incredible music and lyrics. It tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton through a hip-hop lens, offering a fresh take on early American history. In the years following, Hamilton has regularly remained a hot ticket on Broadway and has begun playing in other locations around the world, including London's West End. In 2016, the musical won 11 Tonys, including Best Musical.
Since Hamilton's debut, Miranda has seen his star on the rise. Not only has he appeared in high-profile projects like Mary Poppins Returns and His Dark Materials, he also wrote the music for Disney's Moana. Miranda's first musical, In the Heights, has been turned into a feature film for Warner Bros. and is set for release this June. Next, Miranda will direct Tick, Tick... Boom!, a film about the late composer Jonathan Larson.
Miranda took to Twitter on Thursday to share the previously unheard Hamilton song, prefacing it by saying, "Wish I could send you peace of mind via this app." This is undoubtedly in relation to the coronavirus outbreak that has led to a great deal of uncertainty and stress around the world. The new song is titled "I Have This Friend," and would have been between Hamilton and George Washington (who was played by Christopher Jackson when the show first opened on Broadway). Miranda mentioned that "not even Kail" has heard the song, referring to Thomas Kail, Hamilton's director. Last month, Disney announced it would be releasing a recorded version of Hamilton in theaters, complete with the original Broadway cast. While not arriving until October 15, 2021, fans were nevertheless excited to hear the news, especially those who have not gotten the chance to see it live.
Miranda is known for his sweet and inspirational Tweets, some of which were put into a book in 2018 called Gmorning, Gnight! Little Pep Talks for Me & You. The release of a brand new Hamilton song is a nice positive for the day and will surely cause excitement among the show's fans. Now that Broadway has shuttered its doors for the time being, fans will have to rely on recorded cast albums to get their musical fix. Luckily, Miranda has given them another song to add to their playlist.
