Schitt's Creek: 9 Times David Was The Most Selfless Character On The Show
David Rose comes off as self-centered, ignorant, and materialistic on Schitt's Creek. It seemed like he loved his sweaters more than his family. But once the friendship between David and Stevie is fleshed out, it’s easy to see that David isn’t the selfish shell of a man that he pretends to be. He actually has a huge heart who worries a lot about the people around him.
At first glance, it appears that David only starts caring about people once he falls for Stevie. However, upon rewatching, David’s acts of selflessness are seen far before that time period — they’re just overshadowed by sarcasm. By the final season, it’s easy to see that David Rose is one of the most selfless characters in the show.
9 David Helped Wendy Get The Most Out Of Her Store
When David became the manager of the Blouse Barn, he made big changes in order to modernize the store and make it unique. But when the Blouse Barn was going to close their store due to a competing store with the same name, David didn’t go out without a fight.
It was because of him that Wendy was able to get more money for her store than she was originally offered. He took his dad's advice (and his sister's help) and helped the woman who helped him get his first job in the area.
8 Giving Patrick His Blessing To Date Other People (Even Though It Pained Him)
In ‘Rock On!’, a man named Ken came into Rose Apothecary and appeared interested in Patrick. Since David was Patrick’s first male partner, David gave Patrick his blessing and told him he could go on a date with Ken to make sure he was 100% set their relationship.
It was torture thinking that his boyfriend could potentially like someone else, but it was for Patrick’s best interest. Luckily for David, Patrick never went on the date and didn’t need to date anyone other than David.
7 David Made Sure Wendy's Niece Was Okay After An 'Embarrassing' Moment
When Wendy asked David to babysit her teenaged niece, David was less than thrilled but felt like he had no choice. The young girl arrived at David’s motel and the two watched TV and drank coffee together. But when she suddenly got up to go to the bathroom, she nervously told David that she unexpectedly got her period.
The stain remained on David's expensive comforter, which scared the young girl. Thankfully, David handled it with grace and made her feel better about the situation. It's natural and she shouldn't feel ashamed by it.
6 David's Deep Worry For His Sister
In 'Driver's Test,' Alexis prepares David for his driver's test but it blows up in her face when his anxiety overcomes him. David went on to pass his driver's exam despite his fears, but he and Alexis were still on thin ice.
While venting to each other, David told Alexis that he spent most of his youth worrying about his sister and wondering if she was okay or not. Alexis was always jet-setting around the world and wasn't the best communicator. They had serious trust issues, but at that moment, Alexis realized how much David gave up for her.
5 David Protected Alexis' Feelings When Ted Moved On
In 'Girls' Night,' Moira told Alexis and David that she ran into Ted at the cafe while on a date with a woman. David knew that Alexis wasn't over Ted and wasn't handling the conversation well, so he tried steering the conversation elsewhere to save Alexis' feelings.
When Alexis left the room, David gave his mom a pep talk and told her to "pay more attention to [her] daughter's life." Just as he noted in "Driver's Test," David was once again trying to help Alexis.
4 He Helped Stevie Through Her Great Aunt's Death
In season 3, Stevie found out that her great aunt—the original owner of the motel—passed away. Stevie didn't have many family members, which meant her great aunt's arrangements were now in her hands.
David gave assistance to Stevie as soon as she needed it. He stepped up to help her in her time of need. His presence alone was enough to make Stevie feel supported.
3 David Rescued His Mother's Performance
In 'Asbestos fest,' Moira was planning a big performance to give the townspeople what they were looking for: a night with TV's Moira Rose. However, the plethora of options went straight to Moira's head and she was overcome by decision-making.
Luckily for her, David saved the day by telling her that he would join her on stage for one of their holiday duets. Without David's suggestions, Moira would have floundered.
2 He Was Prepared To Stand Up For Patrick Against His Parents
In 'Meet The Parents,' Patrick's parents were in town to celebrate his birthday. And thanks to Johnny, they accidentally found out that their son was gay and in a relationship with David.
David and Johnny weren't sure what Patrick's parents thought about their relationship, so David approached them, prepared to defend his boyfriend. Beautifully, this wasn't necessary as Patrick's parents were supportive of his and David's relationship.
1 He Helps The Schitts More Than He's Credited For
Roland and Jocelyn Schitt have some pretty cringeworthy moments on the show; however, they really do have the Roses' best interest at heart. And while the couple helped the Roses countless times, David had also helped the Schitts.
He helped Roland shop for Jocelyn, and he even gave Jocelyn a subtle makeover for her campaign against his own mother. These small acts of kindness show that David would help anyone — not just his family.
