Hellboy Creator's British Paranormal Society Promises Eldritch Mystery
The dark and mysterious world first brought to fans in the pages of the acclaimed comic book series Hellboy is being expanded upon by the series’ creator Mike Mignola with the launch of The British Paranormal Society: Time Out of Mind miniseries. The British Paranormal Society is an organization in Hellboy lore that studies and investigates supernatural occurrences within the physical world. In this new miniseries, fans will have the chance to explore corners of the mysterious society that have yet to be fully developed with the return of some fan-favorite characters that only made brief appearances in previous Hellboy-adjacent comics.
The all-new, four-issue miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics will be helmed by the creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, along with iZombie co-creator Chris Roberson. The artwork of the new miniseries will come from Andrea Mutti with colors by Lee Loughridge. Cover art for all four issues will be done by artist Sebastian Fiumara who is no stranger to the Hellboy mythos, as they previously did artwork for the series Abe Sapien.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the creators behind the miniseries spoke of their excitement for this new chapter in the Hellboy mythos and the two main characters the series will follow. “I love the dynamic between the British Paranormal Society’s Simon Bruttenholm and Honora Grant when they appeared in supporting roles of Witchfinder, and I really wanted to spend more time with the characters,” said miniseries co-creator Chris Roberson. Roberson also spoke on the inspiration behind the miniseries set within the Hellboy universe as well as decisions made behind the scenes to make the book the best it could be. “When we first started talking about doing an Edwardian-era English folk horror story, it seemed the perfect opportunity to bring the pair of them onto center stage. Andrea Mutti was the first and only artist we had in mind to draw it.” Mignola has crafted a vast world surrounding Hellboy, from his allies in the B.P.R.D. to villain-focused series such as Koshchei the Deathless.
The series will follow British Paranormal Society members Simon Bruttenholm and Honora Grant as they arrive together at the seemingly innocent town of Noxton, where they have reason to believe there are some supernatural goings on. While the two arrive at Noxton together, they will have separate intentions, as Grant works to uncover the mysteries of the town whie Bruttenholm searches for his missing assistant. Even though the two British Paranormal Society members are taking different angles on their investigations of this town, their paths will intersect as the terrifying secrets of Noxton will be revealed. Bruttenholm is the brother of Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and an ally of Sir Edward Grey - two major figures in the expanded Hellboy lore.
The British Paranormal Society: Time Out of Mind seems as though it will be a new twist on Mike Mignola's trademark paranormal investigation, taking fans back to the era of the gripping Witchfinder series. The British Paranormal Society: Time Out of Mind #1 will be published by Dark Horse Comics, available to Hellboy fans from April 27.
