«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Asian shares are mostly higher after Wall Street rose to records following better-than-expected updates on the economy and a mixed set of profit reports from big U.S. companies. Japan’s Nikkei 225 edged as traders stayed on the sidelines ahead of a parliamentary election on Sunday that could wipe out the ruling coalition's upper house majority. On Thursday, the S&P 500 climbed 0.5% to top its all-time high set a week earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5%, and the Nasdaq composite... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Republican-led Congress had passed President Donald Trump’s request to claw back about $9 billion in public broadcasting and foreign aid spending. Democrats tried to kill the measure but needed more Republicans uncomfortable with the president’s effort to join them. The Senate approved the vast majority of Trump’s request in the early morning hours Thursday. The House followed suit early Friday. The measure now goes to Trump for his signature. The bill would rescind nearly $1.1 billion from the... Читать дальше...

State media in Myanmar say the Southeast Asian nation's military government has recaptured a strategic gateway town after nearly a year of effort, marking a rare turnaround in the country’s northeast, where an alliance of ethnic rebel militias seized a large swath of territory in an offensive that began in late 2023. The House is poised to OK Trump's $9 billion cut to public broadcasting and foreign aid

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The House is expected to approve President Donald Trump’s request to claw back about $9 billion for public broadcasting and foreign aid. Democrats argued that the Republican administration’s animus toward foreign aid programs would hurt America’s standing in the world and create a vacuum for China to fill. The White House argued that many of the cuts best served the taxpayer and would incentivize other nations to step up and do more to respond to humanitarian crises. A final vote to approve the spending cuts package is expected Thursday night.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The State Department is pulling back from commenting on or criticizing elections overseas unless there's a clear and compelling U.S. foreign policy interest in doing so.
