A former Philadelphia police officer who shot and killed a motorist during a traffic stop is free after he was sentenced and granted parole by a judge. Thursday's sentence drew condemnations from District Attorney Larry Krasner and the victim’s family, while the lawyer for the former officer, Mark Dial, says the judge did the right thing. The judge sentenced Dial to 9 1/2 months in jail and immediately granted Dial parole because he had already been jailed for 10 months following his arrest in 2023. A jury convicted Dial in May of voluntary manslaughter and acquitted him of murder charges. Krasner says the judge went “way below” sentencing guidelines.
