Gabrielle becomes a hurricane in Atlantic waters southeast of Bermuda

Forecasters say Gabrielle has become a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Bermuda. Gabrielle had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph Sunday afternoon and was expected to undergo further intensification in the coming hours. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the Category 1 hurricane was centered about 310 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving to the north-northwest on a track expected to take it east of the island on Monday. Gabrielle is kicking up large waves around Bermuda and the big ocean swells are expected to reach the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward this week.
