And President Donald Trump is citing it as partial justification for the military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The Monroe Doctrine is named for President James Monroe. It was originally aimed at opposing European meddling in the Western Hemisphere. It's since been invoked repeatedly by subsequent presidents angling to justify U.S. intervention in the region. Trump says that some people today like to call it the “the Don-roe Doctrine.”
