A regional passenger aircraft carrying 11 people has lost contact with ground control while approaching a mountainous region between Java and Sulawesi islands in Indonesia. A search and rescue operation is underway. The turboprop ATR 42-500 was on its way from Yogyakarta to South Sulawesi’s capital when it vanished from radar. Multiple search teams, supported by air force helicopters, drones, and ground units, have been deployed. Hikers on Mount Bulusaraung reported finding debris and small fires. The plane disappeared shortly after being instructed to correct its approach alignment. Steep terrain has complicated search efforts.
