Guatemalan police free hostages in a maximum security prison
Hundreds of anti-riot police have entered a maximum-security prison in Guatemala to free guards taken hostage and retake control. Shots sounded as police swept into the Renovation prison southwest of Guatemala City. About 15 minutes later, guards appeared to be unharmed. No injuries or deaths were immediately reported. Guatemala’s Interior Minister reported Saturday night that nine guards were held hostage. Three dozen others were held at two other prisons in a coordinated uprising. The Interior Ministry said the uprising resulted from a decision to strip privileges from imprisoned gang leaders.
