The utility that operates the Fukushima plant that melted down in 2011 restarted a reactor at the world’s largest nuclear power plant, which it also operates in north-central Japan. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant has been offline since the 2011 disaster. Officials say Japan needs to accelerate atomic power use to increase energy security. Resuming operation is the No. 6 reactor, one of seven units at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, run by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings. The restart, which comes only two years after a major quake in the nearby Noto region, has rekindled worry among residents about nuclear safety and evacuation plans.
