A landslide last week collapsed tunnels at a major coltan mining site in eastern Congo, leaving at least 200 people dead. The collapse occurred on Wednesday at the Rubaya mines, controlled by M23 rebels, and was caused by heavy rains. The rebels and the Congolese government traded accusations over responsibility as news from the remote region began to come out. The collapse is one of the deadliest disasters in recent memory in an area already facing a displacement crisis and ongoing conflict. In May 2024, M23 seized the town and took control of its mines.
